Where to find good bread in Singapore

I love bread. No wait, I love good bread. None of that Gardenia/Sunshine/Boujour crap that you get in supermarkets. Not even local bakeries which somehow don’t end up doing bread very well. I like two types of bread: good, crusty baguette type bread and multi grain/seed loaves.
In London, my favourite bread was from Le Pain Quotidien, a Belgian bakery/cafe/restaurant which made the best strawberry fresh cream tarts. Diet? What diet? Their pain ancien was to die for. Crusty but thin on the outside; soft, fluffy and springy on the inside. Naturally, the baguettes from many bakeries/restaurants don’t come close, even in London. [Aside: I’ve never tried the bread from Ladurée.]
Ah but I’ve finally found my perfect bread at Sun Moulin (350 Orchard Road, basement of Lido, opposite Isetan supermarket). My twinie’s mom introduced me to their “French baguette” which is every bit as good as le pain ancien and at S$2.20 a loaf, isn’t expensive at all.
I bought two loaves, sliced them up, chucked them into the freezer ready to defrost and eat as desired. They taste every bit as good after having spent some time in the freezer as they were fresh. Seriously. This is a good tip for those of you who can’t seem to finish your bread before it goes stale.
Today as I was waiting for my soup to cook, I thought I’d have a slice of toasted bread and butter. I ended up having two and I’m happier for it.
Oh, for those of you who might chance upon a French style deli called “Delifrance,” their stuff sucks. Go to Sun Moulin.
