Afternoon at the library

Decided to go to the library on Bras Basah today (and walked there too from Novena!!) coz I wanted to do some research on a project I’m working on and having never been to Japan, I had no idea what Japan is like or how the city of Tokyo is organised. Paris has its arrondissements, London has its boroughs, New York has it’s neighbourhoods; LA I’ve been to but can’t for the life of me understand. Thought a guidebook might give a quick lay of the land. But I digress, this post is about the library.

I haven’t been to this library till I moved back to Singapore. Before I left Singapore, there was still a library on the 5th floor of Ngee Ann City. (I even tried to make a trip there recently!)  And I had outstanding fines on my (lost) library card which I have since paid.

I’ve been to the library a couple of times since coming back. Location wise it’s quite convenient. It’s not in the heart of Orchard Road so I don’t have to brave the shoppers to get there. It’s really big, much bigger than the libraries I went to in London. There are armchairs, cushioned benches and tables, but I think there aren’t enough tables. The people who go to the library are really diverse. People at the library. Might be quite an interesting project to do.

The first time I went, I was just passing through and decided to take a look. Last week I went because I was looking for a book - Non-Adhesive Binding: Books without Paste or Glue by Keith Smith which Notabilia recommended. As luck would have it, it was checked out and would only be back earliest next week of the borrower doesn’t decide to extend it. The self check out kiosks are touch screens. It’s all so high tech and cool (and I so totally sound like I’ve in a very backward place).

Another reason for posting this picture is because I really like this picture. Taken on Instagram on my iPhone 4, the depth of field is pretty cool. And of course all the effects and filters that come with Instagram.

Go to the library. It’s an interesting place to be.
