Slip cover for my MacBook Pro
I’ve been sewing all day today, well almost. On Tuesday I went to Plaza Singapura with Delphine and the kiddies (a two year old Diego who’s funny and will listen to my broken French and reply in French and a 3 month old Leo who’s just the most smiley baby alongside with Paula) and picked up some really pretty navy blue and white spot fabric at Spotlight. It was avery quick...

Afternoon at the library
Decided to go to the library on Bras Basah today (and walked there too from Novena!!) coz I wanted to do some research on a project I’m working on and having never been to Japan, I had no idea what Japan is like or how the city of Tokyo is organised. Paris has its arrondissements, London has its boroughs, New York has it’s neighbourhoods; LA I’ve been to but can’t for the...

An afternoon at K ki
My friend Sue told me about K ki a few weeks ago, said it was a Japanese style French patisserie which sold cakes! Cakes? I’m always to try a cake place. Especially for the pretty delicate cakes that I don’t make myself. And after reading The Endangered Sartorialist’s review of the Noisette, I decided it was what I wanted to have, even before I entered the patisserie. ...

The people in Essaouira
Essaouira, being a seaside town, draws many tourists but probably not as many as Marrakech. Many people come for the day. Some come for water sports. A guy I met on the bus (well, actually we were at the rest stop enroute) was going there to learn kite surfing and had no idea how many days he would be there. I see a lot of folk in traditional clothes, particular the older men and women....

Eating in Essaouira
When it’s hot, and boy was it hot in both Marrakech and Essaouira, the best meals are made with loads of fresh vegetables. But Moroccan food doesn’t seem to be very veggie centric. Accompanying every meal that we had though, was this simple but deelish dish tomatoes. Made mainly from tomatoes, all chopped up, with chopped onions, slithers of cabbage, cucumber and a smattering of...

Children learn what they live
If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel...

Market stalls & locals in Essaouira
When we were in Essaouira, we had the opportunity to look out the upstairs window of a restaurant owner whose resutarant was closed after lunch and before dinner service. Looking down at the streets from a very different vantage point is really interesting. A Berber artisan apparel shop sports a sign that reads L’Etoile du Sud - the star of the south. Though why I am not so sure as...

A few Coptic bound handmade books
Over the last few days, I made two B5 notebooks and an A6 notebook. And today, I shipped two of them off to friends as gifts. I hope they’ll be as happy with them as I am and enjoy using them as much as I’ve enjoyed making them. What I love most about the Coptic style of binding is that it allows the book to sit flat, making it ideal for writing in. I love the gorgeous...

Not really here
My brain is so scattered right now I almost went to bed with the air conditioning on and the window open were it not for a shout from outside. I guess it’s another one of those days/moments where I’m feeling as if there’s a whole lot inside me that really needs to go somewhere but I have no outlet for it so it remains trapped inside me. I can smile, I can talk and joke. But...

Sneak peek into a real home in Essaouira
When we were in Essaouira, we had the opportunity to visit an artist’s abode, right in the city center. Welcome to Hamid’s home. It was a four storey windy little house with a large skylight and all sorts of little knick knacks inside. Pictured above, a multitude of crockery from traditional Moroccan bowls, tagines and other clay vessels, to the what looks like Alessi (or...

Welcome to Essaouira
Essaouira. Lydia and I didn’t plan to go to Essaouira. Our Marrakech holiday was such a last minute one we hadn’t planned anything! I did not expect that I’d get a chance to walk in the waters of the Altantic Ocean. Essaouira is a seaside town on the north western tip of the African Continent. I got to make footprints in the sand. The water was crisp, clear and cool, a...

PS Cafe Palais Renaissance
Had plans with Jordi for brunch at PS Cafe Palais Renaissance yesterday and decided on the fly for a late afternoon tea today with Eric. My excuse was that I wanted to try something sweet off their menu. So far I’ve only been to the Dempsey and Palais Renaissance branches and am told that each location has a subtly different menu. I’d been to Dempsey once for dinner (and it was...

Cinnamon French toast & fresh strawberry topped...
Whenever there are red, ripe, sweet smelling strawberries (that aren’t Driscoll’s because from my experience Driscoll’s pick them when they haven’t yet ripened enough to give them a longer shelf life and so are tasteless and hard) in the supermarket, I buy some for immediate consumption. So far, the best strawberries I’ve found are from NTUC Fairprice and Carrefour...

My favourite things
Breakfast Strawberry jam But this is not your run of the mill strawberry jam, oh no. Not something that you can just pick up at Tesco or Sainsbury’s (or Cold Storage or NTUC if you live in Singapore). Sometimes, just sometimes, you can find a small selection of England Preserves (sorry, there’s no company website right this moment but you can google) at Waitrose but not the whole...
