Baked a cake today. And took some pictures. I prefer this one. Here’s another one of the cake. This weekend has been one of creating lots of stuff.

The streets of Philadelphia
I couldn’t embed the video and I didn’t look for an alternate download but you can view the Youtube video of Bruce Springsteen’s The Streets of Philadelphia here. I didn’t actually know this song but as I was looking at my photos, the line “the streets of Philadelphia” came to mind and I sort of knew it was a song. I was bruised and battered and I...

Lucia of the 60s
Meet Lucia. Rana and I decided to do a 1960s style shoot and our we knew Lucia (an ex-colleague’s daughter) would be perfect for it. Here are some shots from the day. View the Lucia set on Flickr here.

Unexpectedly good coffee at Camden
Rana and I decided to make a trip to Camden today and boy was it cold! We were wandering around Camden Lock Village shopping, deciding where to go for coffee and a little rest when we found this little gem of a coffeeshop - Coffee Circus. We were still thinking about whether to have coffee here and we asked the barista if his coffee was good. There was an Australian couple ordering coffee...

Penne with scallops in a garlic butter sauce
Evonne went to Billingsgate and helped me buy a big box of scallops! Tonight’s dinner was penne with scallops in a garlic butter sauce. It was yummy!

On the edge
Sometimes I feel like I’m sitting just on the edge of my life, wondering what’s going on inside. Taken in Philly. In a shop window. Somewhere.

Bodhi's in the morning
Bodhi’s was regular coffeeshop when I was in Philly. It was about 2 minutes away from Daniel’s house and the coffee was excellent. Some days, because it the weather was so hot and muggy, I’d delay going out into the ‘open’ in favour of coffee and free wifi in Bodhi’s. This was their special cupcake. I don’t remember what it was called but it was...

Salad for dinner
I threw some things together for dinner last night which made for a pretty yummy salad. Ingredients: Flat leaf parsley Cucumber, deseeded. Put some salt and let it stand in a colander to draw excess water out Sliced button mushrooms Chorizo slices Chopped tomatoes I mixed everything together, drizzled some olive, and pepper (there’s salt from the cucumber so I left salt out). And then...

Creative writing house in Philly
One of the most interesting things about my travels in the US is how I got to see each city through the eyes of friends living there. In New York, I met media and advertising types. In DC, government people. In San Francisco, software and techy people, and in Philly, my friend Daniel is a lecturer and MFA student at Rutgers who shares a house with a fellow writer/lecturer and a Masters student...

Jamie's Italian - yes or no?
Bruschetta with grilled mushrooms, mushroom fritti, bucatino carbonara, rabbit ragu pappardelle. Bruschetta was kinda ordinary. I think I’d have preferred plain ol’ tomato or fully mushroom. I couldn’t really taste the mushroom from the rest. Oh, and it had ricotta cheese too which I just didn’t get. Mushroom fritta was good, especially with the garlic mayo -...

Books
Was at Westfield’s today running errands and inadvertently spent most of my time at Foyles ogling the cooking section. So many books to buy, so little shelf space; my Amazon wishlist has so many food books - cookbooks as well as foodie books like Chocolat. Last night I was reading food blogs and came across an electric food dehydrator. Needless to say I need one but I haven’t found...

Chocolat
I loved the film when I first saw it. Then Daniel recommended I read the book. While I like the cinematography of the film, the book (though I’m only halfway through) seems so much richer with its subcontexts.

And Goldilocks says...
Weather in Singapore is way too hot and humid. It’s quite unbearable many times. If it were only hot it’d be easier to handle, but the humidity is the killer. Weather in London is freaking cold. I love my leather gloves, my best pair in 5 winters that actually help keep my hands warm. But this is my coldest winter made more difficult by too much time on my (frozen) hands. I went to East London...

The year so far
I’ve just realised that I haven’t actually written anything recently - no thoughts, feelings, experiences - only things from other people and (very) random context-less sentences. But I’ve had heaps of thoughts, truckloads of emotions, so so many, too many to sort through and file away. I’ve found it difficult to articulate especially in a public space and I haven’t...
