Such a Sunday
Today was a rather sian day. I had my glasses on the whole day so my ears kinda hurt now. Woke up later than usual becase the daylight savings started or ended (I never know which is which) and we lost an hour overnight. The weather kept alternating between sunny and rainy spells, which made going out rather sian. We ended up not doing a lot, but I made banana cake and ironed clothes....

Dinner at Evonne's and champagne on the house!
We had a great evening last night, beginning with cooking dinner at Evonne’s and ending with us finishing up the two complimentary bottles of champagne at Kensington Roof Gardens! Winnie made the stewed pork belly that she learnt at the Divertimenti cooking course that we’d got for her. I tried my hand at beef rendang which didn’t taste too bad but the meat didn’t...

It's amazing!!!
There are so many amazing, talented people in the world. Notte Sento (English subtitles) from napdan on Vimeo. A girl misses her train to Milan and is set to wait overnight in Rome until dawn. However, a chance encounter with a guy changes her plans and the night lights of the capital turn into the background to a tender love story. An extraordinary chemistry made of knowing glances...

Impatient
I’m an impatient person. It’s true. I acknowledge that. My dad says it’s because I catch on so fast and I don’t understand when others haven’t got it yet. Of course there’s also the “I want it now” syndrome and that applies to my assessment of myself just as much (or maybe more than?) others. In pilates, my instructor asked if I was a tense person,...

A walk in the park
Met a friend of Sue Ern’s today, Audrey. We’d been trying to arrange a meet up for some weeks but it didn’t happen till today. We went to the South Kensington Creperie; instead of taking pictures of food, all my pictures today were of the beautiful trees and flowers, mostly taken as we walked through Kensingon Gardens. It was a beautiful day. I still can’t believe spring...

Dilemma
Adult life is fraught with all kinds of conflicting decisions. The concept of opportunity cost that one learns in Economics 101 doesn’t really mean anything until one is working and money is a scarce resource. I know not everyone will understand my dilemma. How can she do that to a friend? What’s even worse is that she herself will understand and that makes me feel like I’m a...

The Prince Bonaparte
I was absolutely delighted by the Pan fried baby squid, chorizo & pepper bruschetta I had at The Prince Bonaparte, a gastropub on Chepstowe Road. We were absolutley famished from not having had anything to eat in the morning before we embarked on a series of 4-flat viewings and getting quite desperate about what we could fill out stomachs with. I was a little skeptical because pub lunches...

Spring is in the air
“Is it spring yet?” I ask with baited breath. Even though I wasn’t here for all of it, the winter feels as if it’s gone on forever. My wool coats and boots are my best friends. Static and numbness are my worst enemy. So it’s been a real treat the the last week or so (including the weekend) has been gorgeous and pretty and sunny. I think the plants feel it too...

Expensive holidays
I’m not feeling well. What I usually call the Flu, Brits seem to think of as a common cold. My symptoms are a sore throat, a dry cough that has turned into a phlegmy cough, wheezing, runny and blocked nose at the same time, and I think I have the remnants of a fever. I can’t concentrate on idea generation and have spent most of today on data entry and checking. Repetitive...

Macarons:: attempt #3
This is my third batch of macarons. How beautiful are they? I peeked through the oven door about 6 minutes into cooking and exclaimed “OMG!” and Andrew thought they’d burnt or something but my exclaimation was one of amazement and excitement that the “foot” of my macarons had formed. Not only that, but the surface stayed smooth and glossy and didn’t crack...

Eggs Royale
I really like breakfast & brunch. Had a breakfast meeting this morning at The Zetter in Clerkenwell with the other members of my team. I had eggs royale. I didn’t actually know what eggs royale were; but I figured that (a) at the higher end of the price range and (b) with the term “royale,” it really couldn’t be that bad. The competing alternative was scrambled eggs...

A little more about Refuge
These are the early warning signs that of a potentially abusive relationship. Here is their ad in text form. A PDF of their colour ad with imagery can be found here. According to the Home Office, two women in England and Wales are killed by their partner or ex-partner every week. At Refuge, we’ve learned in our 37 years that what starts as a slap or shove can escalate into a pattern of frequent...

Women's Refuge
I think I’m doing too many things at once. I’ve just finished watching Sleeping with the Enemy and now have CSI season 9 on. The last few days I’ve been doing a lot of research into domestic abuse. Under Tamara Ingram’s leadership, I am working on Refuge, which as its names suggest, is a charity that helps women suffering from domestic violence by giving them a safe place...

Macarons:: attempt #1
Ever since Caroline introduced Laduree macaroons to me, I’ve loved those little light, crunchy yet chewy delectable bites of fruit and chocolate. The best I’ve had have been Laduree. I’ve been thinking about making my own for some time but stories of meringues dropping and a general fear of whites not rising held me off. Till now. Macaroons are quite a pricey little treat and...

Breakfast & brunch
Today’s breakfast. Sunday’s brunch. I love breakfasts. And brunches. I don’t have them enough. Recently, I’ve been eating shredded wheat with honey yoghurt at work because they’re really easy. It beats craving for sugar and butter toast at 10:30 in the morning. Today, I had strawberries. Living in a temperate country means that strawberries (and other berries)...

Too good to not snap
I don’t know if I’d say it’s rare to see the sun in London but it is something that’s definitely not seen enough. That’s why even though I was running late to a meeting last Friday, I paused to take a few snaps of Tower Bridge as I was on my way to the meeting. And took more shots (the HMS Belfast, Liverpool Street area) on the way back to the office. I also...

A blurb about work
Work’s been pretty good actually. I generally finish at a decent hour. There’s a steep learning curve because I’m no longer working on advertising per se which I can pretty much do with my eyes closed. My function is now one of marketing, and I think I should have a new job title to go with it. It’s challenging work but very interesting. The team are lovely and this week...
